Scientists discovered that as we age the frequencies our ears can hear degrades. This means that over time we go from being able to hear 22+ khz but slowly our hearing gets down to 10 khz and even lower.

Using this information Howard Stapleton designed The Mosquito, a device used to thwart rowdy teenagers. The device works by blasting a high frequency sound wave; the idea being that teenagers would hear and be bothered by the sound but older shoppers couldn’t hear a thing.

In response teens began using these high frequency soundwaves as ringtones on their cell phones. Phones could audibly ring but teachers and parents wouldn’t hear a thing.

You can hear these frequency waves online. I can hear all the way down to 21 khz. The 22 khz wave is inaudible but does make my head hurt.

1. Wow.. that MC Hammer/Vanilla Ice concert back in ‘88 strikes again. I’m practically deaf. 34 years old and the last one I could hear clearly was the 10khz. at 12khz i knew there was a sound happening, sounded like air whistling, but could not hear an actual tone.
