How does one just up and move to another state without housing or a job? I know people do it all the time and I’d love to be one of those people.

Me, too. I’m tired of living in Tennessee with all these sloped-brow, knuckle-draggin’ jesus monkeys.
“I know people do it all the time…”
Are you sure about that? Or is that just gossip and hearsay. Because in all honesty I have never met anyone who has ever done that in any way. Friend, acquaintances, etc. It simply does not happen.
In my case, I moved to the midwest after visiting it twice and then having friends there and some basic info about the place when I moved. Also, at the point I moved I had enough of a work-history and enough savings that I could deal with starting off in a new state/city on my own.
Nobody I know has ever ‘just up and moved’ anywhere. You make connections. You learn. Do research and then move. Doing anything else is simply foolish.
And in all honesty, if you have to ask about something like that, you’re definitely not ready to do something like that.

I think this is a great question and am glad you asked it. I have considered doing it myself. Currently I live in Cali but have often longed to move to New York City. Have visited a few times and read about it a lot and i really want to have the exprience of living in NYC at least for a few years.
Moving to another state with no connections and little cash is very risk and i have fantasized maybe even exciting. Hey maybe those poeple you know who do it all the time could give us daydreamers some inspiration and advice about what to do! That would be great.
It’s definitely the kinds of people that I admire. Just uprooting oneself like that takes a lot of risk-taking bravery and I agree with you on that point.
Unfortunately, I’m also a person who loves safety and security a little too much to take on that sort of sudden change in her own life. Call me a coward but I think Hershey’s got it right - Change is bad.

I’ve got a wife and a child, so I don’t have that luxury to just ‘get up and go’. Still— even if I were single, I would already have a plan in place. I had the savings, so I could go a month or two without work, but I need a place to live.

Nobody just up and moves, eh? Here’s my testimonial…
There are only two things a person needs if he wants to pack up and move to another state: ADD and poor impulse control. A deeply felt sense of imprisonment in one’s current living situation is not necessary, though it certainly helped me.
Having previously spent a mere five days in New York City during the beginning of that same year, I decided in May of 2002 that I would spend six weeks in the Big Apple taking a course in film editing. At the time, I was in Chicago living a stable, if monotonous, life. I was making a comfortable living as a driver and tour guide and I lived in a spacious two bedroom apartment. My nearly four year relationship with my live-in girlfriend had reached an emotional plateau and I found myself yearning for its end. I did, however, have plenty of smart, interesting friends and co-workers whose presence was the best thing about my life.
When I arrived in New York, I once again felt the love I felt for it during my January visit. My first week was spent in a flophouse-turned-hostel on Bowery but I quickly found a room in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park which I could rent by the week. I took so well to the city and the people I met that I decided to extend my stay indefinitely.
Looking back, I’m glad that I decided to stay, though I did encounter some logistical problems related to the impulsiveness of the decision. For one, my girlfriend did not react well to the news that I would not be returning to Chicago and would be breaking up with her. For another, I had to place my possessions in a storage locker until I could find a real apartment. There was also the issue of the tight New York job market and the fact that my experience as a Chicago tour guide didn’t translate easily to any job I might apply for. Oh, sure, I looked into getting a tour guide license, but one of the requirements was to get written testimonials from three NYC residents who had known me for two years. Before moving here I didn’t know a single person who lived in New York. Anyway, after a brief stint as a driver for Access-A-Ride, a few hundred resumes e-mailed to graphic design firms, and a low paying internship at a TV production company, I landed a steady job at a computer store and repair shop. A few months later I settled into my first real NYC apartment, putting an end to the most nerve-wracking and depressing one-year period of my life.
I guess the lesson is that moving to a new city takes time. Either you spend the time preparing before you leave or you spend the time adjusting while you’re there. In the end, my most important decision was to stick it out for a full year. If I hadn’t promised myself that, I probably would have fled back to Chicago by December. But my perseverance paid off and I ended up happy in a city that I love.
Sometimes.
wow you’re moving away? yea i keep lil mementos too.. and they’re so stupid. lol like a lil plastic bacardi-gras cup and stupid beads i got from new orleans. bah! lolz. oh! *sob* we’re growing up!
Mr. Swill thank you for sharing that story and the shelter referrals. I really want to do it and am thinking maybe I should stop being scared and just go for it. I guess doing it alone is a big part of my fear. Your writing indicates to me that you are very intelligent and I feel kinda uppity to think that I would never have thought you had an ordinary retail job. I pictured you being a writer that gets paid for it or self employed.
Lord have mercy on your soul (thinking to self).
