Days after Apple’s announcement of a new “low priced” iPhone the aftermath has arrived. Apple has subsidized the new iPhone in order to provide end users with a lower initial price but all that means is that it is more expensive for us in the long run.

The new iPhone will cost $199 at initial sign-up. As this is a subsidized price it is only available for people who are not currently in contract with AT&T. This means if you are a current AT&T customer who does not have an iPhone you may have to pay a significantly higher price to upgrade your phone to an iPhone.

Above and beyond that, AT&T has raised the data rates for the iPhone from $20 a month for unlimited data and text messaging to $30 a month for unlimited data. That’s right, the price has been normalized with AT&T’s other data plans and it no longer includes text messaging. This means the lower initial price for the iPhone actually costs you an extra $240 over the life of your contract.

The final straw that has broke my back is the fact that AT&T will still not allow business class discounts on iPhone plans. Through my job I receive a significant discount on AT&T phone plans. The only exception to this discount is for iPhones. If an iPhone is my main phone then I am not eligible for any rate discounts.

It’s still not too late for Apple and AT&T to change their policies. The phone will not be released for another full month. I hope they come to their senses before July 11th because I’d love to buy two iPhones and add them to my phone plan, but I will only do it if it is worthwhile and right now it doesn’t look like it is worth it.
