On the 20th I had a flight from Philadelphia airport to Wichita Kansas, with a layover in Chicago. This meant getting up at 10am, hopping in a cab to New Paltz, catching a bus to Philadelphia via New York, train to the Airport and hopping on the plane.

Simple enough.

All went smoothly until we got to the airport, whereupon I was declared an “unaccompanied minor” and could not fly. That got straightened out quick enough, after all how many minors do you know with a full beard? Once I had my boarding pass in hand I checked my bags, stripped for the airport security and got to my terminal.

At the terminal I proceeded to wait 5 hours for a delayed flight (fog in Chicago). The plane finally arrived at 10pm, I got to Chicago and found out that my connecting flight had left without me. The next flight to Wichita would be leaving on Sunday, it was Thursday. Luckily a flight was about to leave for St. Louis so I flew down to Missouri, arriving around 2 am.

Once in St. Louis I rented a car and began the 6 and a half hour drive to Wichita. We drove for an hour or two and pulled over to rest. After a quick hotel parking lot nap the drive we continued the simple enough trek.

Then the snow came. Blankets of white came down fast and hard, now the snow wouldn’t be a problem if I was driving in New York or any eastern state. There are plenty of salt trucks and plows to deal with the measly 6 or so inches that actually fell, but I was in Kansas—flat land.

The wind turned a simple snow shower into a blizzard. Snow was coming in sideways and plows were ineffective at best. For some portion of the ride I was directly behind a plow truck and still driving through snow as anything he pushed off the road got immediately blown back on.

Thats not to even mention the two car accidents I was in, one pickup truck sideswiped me into a ditch. Sitting in the ditch for 30 minutes I watched five or six cars spin off the road. An hour later I was spun off the road avoiding another accident, where I drove for a mile or so stuck in mud to become visible to a tow truck.

The six hour drive from St. Louis to Wichita ended up taking about 18 hours.

So how was your Christmas?

  1. Hoy crap!  Did insurance cover those mishaps?  Happy you didn’t get hurt.

  1. The insurance covered it all and both accidents weren’t serious. The stress was much worse than any physical.

  1. Nasty thing that you spend so many hours just on road. I’ve prefered to stay home and what christmas movies unless going somewhere else.

  1. Haha, WHAT?!?!!  That sucks, dude.

Another thing that sucks…I saw you and Taino for a total of 3 minutes.

P.S. I may be moving to Philly for school next semester!  We can visit.
