What is the best process to go about buying a used car? I’m trying to get a decent used car for around $1,000 dollars. I don’t mind buying through private individuals or dealers.

Should I be looking through eBay? Craigslist? Any help would be appreciated!

  1. Autotrader.com for a mid 90s Honda or Toyota

  1. There’s no one best way to do this or renting an apartment.

You should simply go and check out whatever you can check out and be strong enough to say “No!“ and not let anyone force you into a deal.

As far as cars go, I would never buy one without seeing it or driving it.  And if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. And dealers will always charge more than individuals.

  1. craigs list is a pretty decent route.

Autotrader is alright… not really for the cheap end though.

driving around and looking for cars for sale is alright… the Thrifty Nickel is pretty good for that price range.

cardomain.com (now some MSN site) is good for doing research about any given car. (post 1988, i think)

    good luck!

  1. Those are all good routes to go. eBay is good if you don’t mine not test driving it. Craig’s List is always a place to start a initial search, but some of the ads are starting to be filled by auto dealers pretending to be individual sellers.

  1. You have some shifty friend who needs to get rid of his car for cash because he’s moving. Then you buy it ($1400), and then you should (but you won’t because you don’t yet realize how bad it is) beat the crap out of him and shit on his pillow.

Now that you’ve bought it, all your friends who know cars will stop by and point out all the stuff that’s broken, though before they didn’t seem to want to talk about it.

You’ll find that it’s almost impossible to get the car legal because no one has a replacement tail light ($40) for that year, so you’ll spend $50 on temporary certification.

Then you’ll have to replace the muffler ($150), but the pipes will have to be redone ($80) because God only knows why the same muffler can’t fit in the same car with the same pipes.

You’ll get a flat and order new tires ($30) on the Internet but they’ll be the wrong size so you’ll say to yourself, “I can just get new rims” and after spending 3 days searching through junkyards run by rednecks you’ll find the rims ($70) only to discover that they’re too large to fit around the brakes. So you’ll just get new tires from Walmart ($45) (which you should have done in the first place), send the Internet tires back to get about $10 back and throw the rims out.

By now you’ve realized that the brakes are almost gone. You’ll find out from a friend that the previous owner like to use the e-brake to fishtail into parking spots and wonder why he didn’t tell you that when you were about to buy it.

You’ll put off getting new brakes by downshifting, so a month after you get the new brakes ($400) your slave cylinder will go and you’ll wind up replacing that and the master cylinder ($300).

Oh, and don’t forget that old cars need regular oil changes and you’ll probably want to buy a completely new battery.

That said, as someone who never owned a car before in his life, he understands why people can’t live without them. And if I ever find the fucker who sold me my car…

  1. Aww scooby, I’ve missed you. smile

  1. You mean you missed my sunny disposition and positive outlook on life.

BTW, how’s the weather where you are? We’ve had a bit of rain here in Louisiana.

  1. I have been looking as well for a 1000 $ car.
My friends suggested me, before to buy it, to ask to a mechanic.
Normally a mechanic can check the health of a car for about 30 $.
Make sure not to pay before you know the results of the car exam.
Before to buy the car it is also useful to have an idea
about how many years you like to have it. ohoh
