I’m interested in adopting a dog sometime soon. Does anyone know the process involved? I’d prefer a puppy and have never owned my own dog before.

Do I need someone to vouch for my ability to have a pet? Where would I begin looking? I’m particularly interested in a terrier of some sort but any loving dog would do fine.

1. I vote for starting out at any kennel that does have a kill policy so you can save a great pet’s life.

   The process isn’t too grueling, but then again—I got my dog in Florida—I don’t know what your rules are. What they did ask, however, was if it was okay with your landlord that you could own an animal. They even contacted my then apartment complex to make sure I wasn’t making that info up.

   Finding a dog is a great experience. I remember when I first saw my dog at the pound looking up at me with a sad, but hopeful look on her face. And when my wife and I spent a few minutes with her to see if we liked her demeanor, she went totally crazy, and I loved it. That was six years ago now, and I can’t imagine not getting her.

1. Thanks for the input Gabe. Now if I am looking for a particular breed of dog the best option is pretty much to find a breeder and buy it direct from them, right?

   Oh also, shelters do have puppies and not just older dogs?

1. Yeah, if you’re looking for a certain breed than a breeder is the right way to go. That said, you can still try the animal shelter for the breed you like.

   As far as puppies go—depends. I saw puppies at the shelter I went to, but they weren’t newborns either. Mostly they have older dogs, but I believe that they have a rather wide spectrum when it comes to the age of the dog.
