Why did Christ sacrifice the chance to have a wife and a family?
How is this considered a good thing?
Isn’t the entirety of modern Christian faith based on the concept of familial values?

What makes it okay to persecute Scientology but not Christianity or any other established religion?
Is a virgin birth and walking on water, or the idea that Moses walked through the desert for 40 years on manna really different from Thetans?

Mahatma Gandhi walked barefoot everywhere, to the point that the soles of his feet became quite thick and hard. Being a very spiritual person, he ate very little and often fasted. As a result, he was quite thin and frail. Furthermore due to his diet, he ended up with very bad breath.
Therefore, he came to be known as a “super callused, fragile mystic plagued with halitosis.”

I spent my New Years Eve/Day in a Buddhist temple reciting prayers to Buddha Tara. I’ll elaborate on the experience more later but I think I am just not a fan of organized religion, in general. Be it Judaism, Islam, Buddhism or Christianity, it just doesn’t mesh well with me…
On a slightly separate note, I lost my favorite beanie. :frown:

I’ve been putting more and more thought into my religion and what I call myself. I was born and raised under the Jewish faith but stopped believing in a God around the age of 11 or 12. Regardless of my belief in God (or lack thereof) I will always be Jewish because… that’s just how it works.
As to the idea of God, the most I can admit to is the concept of an interconnectedness between all living things. This connection between me and my neighbor or me and a a caterpillar is something that I find undeniable. It works on so many levels. It is the scientific idea of cause and effect, it is the Hindu belief of Atman and Brahman, and most importantly to my current self it is the Buddhist idea of Karma.
In a perfect world I’d love to declare myself a Buddhist. The more Buddhist teachings I hear the more I like about the religion. My atheistic beliefs work within Buddhism and the lifestyle I try (and frequently fail at) living is definitely a Buddhist lifestyle. My problem is that no matter how many books I’ve read, no matter how many speeches I’ve downloaded, no matter how many documentaries I’ve watched I really know nothing absolutely nothing at all about Buddhism.
Any way you cut it I am a Western American who is trying his best to live an Eastern lifestyle. I was not raised Buddhist, I do not know the first thing about Buddhist holidays or Buddhist rituals. Declaring myself a Buddhist feels fraudulent. Who am I to just one day wake up and claim part in a culture that has existed for millenniums. Saying the words “I am Buddhist” feels like a lie.
Perhaps it is all in my head but when I claim stake at a religion that I was not raised part of I feel like I am being a fake.
