I’m considering redesigning my weblog, removing some useless site categories, and perhaps even switching main domain names.

The current design was implemented well over four years ago and, quite simply, I’d love a change. I’m hoping to get down to a really minimal page consisting of my linkblog, entries, sponsor links, and an archive. My photoblog has been stagnant for ages so it will probably not make the cut of things to keep.

Does anyone know of some good minimal sight designs I can begin basing the new site on? I’ve never been the best at website layout, I’m hoping that keeping it minimalistic should help with that.

Library

The blogosphere sure gets pretty quiet after 8 o’clock.

I guess the “big players” all have 9-5 jobs.  rolleyes

RSS

I just spent a good 30 minutes updating inactive RSS feeds in Google Reader. I noticed that most people don’t quit blogging, they just move servers or blog software.

Here’s an open tip in regard to blogging. If you change RSS feeds redirect your old feed to the new one. Try to make it as seemless as possible so that months down the road readers don’t wonder where their favorite blogger (you!) went. They can keep up to date and you can try out shiney new blog software to your heart’s desire.

The easiest way to do a redirect would be editing your .htaccess file with the following line:

Redirect permanent old_rss_feed new_rss_feed

Just be sure to use the correct filenames, of course. wink Other file redirect methods can be found at WebConfs.com.

Expression Engine

I’m going to be upgrading the version of Expression Engine this site uses today so we will be offline for some time.

Update: Site is back online. I’ve updated my default RSS feed and recommend that everyone move over to the atom feed. The old RSS 1.0 feeds both forward to the updated atom feed.

Update 2: I fixed an issue with smilies not working on comments. If you want to try out the smilies they should all work again. Along with fixing the issue I changed the smilies from GIF to PNG, making them render better on multiple background colors (plus they just look better).  cool smile

I’m trying this new-fangled Twitter thing.

Something is technically wrong.

Thanks for noticing—we’re going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon.

Going good so well. rolleyes
